Thursday Island
Thursday Island is located just 30 km off Cape York and is accessible by ferry from Seisia, through Peddells Ferry company. The ferry leaves at 8 am from Seisia on alternative days, arrives in Thursday Island around 9/9.15 am and comes back to Seisia in the afternoon around 4, but the boarding in Thursday Island is at 2.30 pm. The ferry is around 106 dollars with return. I found the boat and the service very good, so even if it's a bit expensive, it's possible to enjoy the little journey and have the opportunity to learn a bit more about the history of the Torres Strait thanks to a DVD running on the ferry.
Part of the history of the island is characterised by the pearl shell industry that brought young men moving from Japan to T.I. in order to make their fortunes diving for shell. I wish I could have bought a pearl shell, because they are so beautiful and some of the islanders try to apply their culture and art on the shell, making them worth a buying.
T.I., the name given to the island by locals, offers a rich cultural heritage, beautiful ocean views from the hills and the lookouts and a bit of historical military past that is interesting to discover and knowledge. It was in fact a strategic location and a helpful basel to see if any invader was prone to attack Australia. Green Hill Fort is one of the most intact forts remaining in all Australia, built in 1891-1893, it's worth a visit to explore the underground house with a small museum of military and local history.

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre runs regular cultural events and workshops and by far exhibits a collection of rare artefacts representing the way of life for Torres Strait's ancestors. What makes a must of the experience is the unique lifestyle of the island and the cultural integrity of the islanders. T.I. maintains the history of centuries and it's modern at the same time, so visitors are able to experience a modern society still practising traditional culture in their everyday life.
If you plan your trip there don't miss Horn Island and /or the tours that Peddells offers.
